Boris Johnson announces press conference: What time will the Prime Minister address the nation?

Prime Minister Boris Johnson will lead a Downing Street press conference at 5pm, Number 10 has said.

He will be joined by England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty, and NHS England boss Sir Simon Stevens.

The Government will keep coronavirus measures at the border under review, Downing Street has said, ahead of an expected announcement on quarantine hotels later on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “We will continue to keep our measures at the border under review to ensure that we don’t reimport cases of the (virus) as we continue to try and drive down case numbers.”

Number 10 said it was not expecting vaccine supply levels to change, amid a row between the European Union and AstraZeneca in which Brussels has threatened to block vaccines made in the bloc from being exported.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “AstraZeneca are committed to delivering two million doses a week to the UK and we are not expecting any changes to that”

More than 100,000 deaths involving coronavirus have been registered in the UK, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Some 7,776 deaths involving coronavirus were registered in the UK in the week of 15 January, bringing the total to nearly 104,000.

The ONS figures are based on death certificates that mention coronavirus as being involved in the death.

These are different to the government's daily figures which report deaths within 28 days of a positive test – the figure currently stands at 98,531.
