MPs will today vote on whether to enforce the government’s tougher three-tier regional restrictions tomorrow (Wednesday, December 2).

Large areas of Yorkshire, Midlands, North East and North West are to enter the most restrictive tier, which are classed as ‘very high’ restrictions – affecting 23.3 million people.

What can I do in Tier Three?

The ‘very high’ restrictions permit residents to meet up to six people in outdoor, public areas such as in parks but people are unable to socialise with different households in private gardens.

You can still visit pubs and restaurants however hospitality businesses are only allowed to open for takeaway and collection services, meaning punters cannot enjoy food and drink inside the premises.

Hairdressers and personal care companies, such as nail technicians, will reopen meaning residents can attend appointments while wearing a face covering.

Households are not allowed to meet indoors or outdoors in hospitality venues or in private gardens.

Residents are unable to enjoy a meal or drink inside a cafe, pub or restaurant as all hospitality businesses are only permitted to open as a takeaway or collection service.

Indoor entertainment venues such as casinos, museums, galleries and ice-skating rinks will also remain shut.

Residents are highly discouraged from travelling inside and outside their Tier Three area in an attempt to slow the spread of the virus and prevent surrounding areas from becoming infected.

When will restrictions be lifted?

The government said current tier allocations will be reviewed on December 16 to allow for improving areas to be moved down a tier before Christmas.

Ministers analyse factors such as case detection rates in all age groups, the rate at which cases are rising or falling before deciding what measures an area should be subjected to.

The positivity rate – the number of positive cases detected as a percentage of tests taken – alongside the pressure on the NHS are also considered before a decision is reached.
