Complex care in the home: Supporting people with life-limiting and long-term conditions across Nottinghamshire
Since 2014, Apollo Home Healthcare has provided a complex home healthcare service that they would be happy for their own family members to receive.
This ethos continues today where all staff go above and beyond to ensure their clients live the life they want to live, achieving their aspirations, while receiving high-quality clinical care at home.
“We enable our families to spend quality family time together rather than being full-time carers,” said Laura Walker, Commercial Director for Apollo Home Healthcare.
“As a trusted national provider of complex care in the home, we operate through six local operational hubs across the UK. We work in partnership with Integrated Care Boards (ICBs), case managers, local authorities as well as private clients and those arranging care funded through their Personal Health Budget (PHB).
“Our dedicated local teams and experienced healthcare professionals are committed to ensuring that we consistently deliver a high-quality, complex care service that is centred around the specific clinical, personal and social care needs of our clients that makes a real difference to their lives.”
The service supports both adults and children throughout the Nottinghamshire county. Find out more about Apollo Home Healthcare and the services they offer here.
Geneva’s story
Geneva and her younger brother Toby, from Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, were born with a rare genetic medical condition called Microcephaly. The condition can cause seizures, poor motor function, poor speech and hyperactivity.
Geneva usually lives at home with her loving grandparents, brother Toby and their dog Coco, in a specially adapted annex which is fitted with a ramp, hoists and a wet room. There is also a two-wheelchair adapted vehicle which they use daily.
Geneva (26) is incredibly smiley and happy and thrives on attention and love. She loves being read to and all sensory activities and getting out and about going for drives in the van, going out for walks in the fresh air and sunshine, getting her nails done and shopping.
She is non-verbal but can communicate her wishes using facial expressions and sounds. She has global developmental delay and suffers with epilepsy and seizures. She has a tracheostomy and a gastrostomy tube fitted and requires a ventilator to assist her breathing.
Creating a personal package of care for Geneva
After Geneva’s package of care broke down with her previous provider, Apollo Home Healthcare was contacted by the Integrated Care Board to develop a package of care that would offer the best quality of clinical care for her at home. Due to her complex healthcare needs, Geneva requires support throughout the day and night.
This care package would enable Geneva to live as independently as possible at home with her grandparents and brother, where she loves to be and where she can thrive.
Around 18 months ago, Geneva developed a severe chest infection and spent eight months in ICU where she received excellent care. Due to severity of the infection, Geneva now has a tracheostomy fitted and is on a ventilator 24/7.
Geneva still hasn’t made it home and is currently in respite care, which is around 30 minutes from the family home, while Apollo Home Healthcare seeks and recruits further care assistants who can be trained to meet Geneva’s clinical and personal care needs.
Training includes the care and management of her tracheostomy, ventilation and gastrostomy tubes and all moving and positioning with the operation of a hoist. The team will also learn Geneva’s communication methods, understanding her facial expressions, body language and how to spot when she is unhappy or distressed.
Geneva’s team of carers will allow her to move out of respite care and live safely back at home with her family where she is happiest.
The package of care Apollo Home Healthcare provides to Geneva, Toby and the wider family helps to make life that little bit easier for her loving grandparents, gives them quality family time together and allows them to thrive at home, while enjoying the things they love to do and achieving their goals and aspirations.
