West Notts students’ film about women priests showcased

Media students at West Nottinghamshire College have contributed to a landmark in the history of the Church of England with their filming and editing skills.

Last week Southwell Minster hosted a special celebratory communion to mark 20 years since women were first ordained as priests.

Parishes from across the diocese who have benefitted from women priests joined in last night’s celebrations with men and women priests from the earliest days to present day.

At the event, a film was shown which has been produced by students on the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Creative Media Production (Film and Television).

Featuring eight female priests who were interviewed about their careers and when they were ordained, the film puts across what their feelings are about women priests, the challenges they have faced and their memories and emotions about their roles.

The film, which took students a day to film and a day to edit was commissioned by the diocese of Southwell and Nottingham’s director of communications Richard Ellis.

Richard said: “The film, which looked very impressive on the big screen at the Minster, was described as powerful and moving by those who watched it. It certainly enhanced a very important occasion.

“The students who visited the Minster for the day of filming did themselves proud and we’d like to thank them and their tutors for giving us such a quality product.”
