It is also ranked as one of the top colleges in the UK based on student satisfaction – so it’s no surprise that places are already filling fast.

Options include A-level courses which last for two years, each focusing on a specific subject area; students typically study between three to four A-levels depending on their goal. From September, A-levels will be taught at the Mansfield and Ashfield Sixth Form College at the Chesterfield Road campus in the town centre.

They also have the 2+1 option which allows students to select two A-levels and one vocational subject.

Taking a vocational subject really enhances the learning experience by giving students invaluable hands-on training and it provides work placement in real employment settings. Taking a vocational course alongside A-levels is assessment-based and it’s tailored to suit individual strengths.

Vocational courses under the 2+1 offer includes sport and exercise science, information technology, health and social care, criminology and music.

BTECs are also a great option at West Notts, with nearly 100 technical courses up to Level 3 to choose from. Courses last for one to two years and BTEC qualifications are the fastest-growing route into university, offering you a practical way of learning to gain industry-specific skills and qualifications that are widely recognised by employers.

Or you may be better suited to an apprenticeship, from Level 2 through to university level, which means you can work and earn while studying; you’ll learn practical skills and may also go to college on day release. Applying for apprenticeships is just like applying for a job though, so it can be useful to have a plan B by applying for a BTEC or A-levels as well.

"If you're taking your GCSEs this year and looking at your future options, there's a great experience awaiting you at West Notts College," says vice principal Louise Knott.

"Our focus is on ensuring all of our students move on to a positive destination, whether that's another course, an apprenticeship or employment.

"We work hard to make sure they are ready for future employment and that they're equipped with the skills that employers tell us they need in their workplace."

They'll ensure you have a meaningful work placement to complement your course to help you gain the skills you need for your chosen career. Extensive links with local employers including Nottinghamshire Police and Mansfield District Council as well as the college’s specialist staff will help you to become work-ready.

A careers team is available at the college to offer advice and tutorials on interview skills and techniques, and there's a wide range of student support services, from additional learning support to advice on financial matters and health and wellbeing.

In addition, West Notts offers some of the best facilities in the region plus a Nottingham Trent University centre on campus – and the college bus service means it's easy to get to, with many routes across Mansfield and the surrounding areas.
