It comes after a pupil at King Edward Primary School, St Andrew Street, asked the school council if it “could help raise money for the Australian firefighters, families and animals affected by the bushfires”.

Sue Bridges, headteacher, said the council came up with lots of ideas, including a non-uniform day and bucket collection, while Year 6 pupil Hamish Barnes was heavily involved.

Mrs Bridges said: “Hamish is an Australian student who has been attending King Edward’s for six months and is due to return home soon.

“Pupils learned facts about living in Australia, the impact of the bushfires and tasted some traditional Australian cookies.”

Mrs Bridges said the event raised £393.18, which will be donated to the Australian bushfire appeal, while the school was also hoping to adopt a koala – to be named Hamish.
