Garibaldi students take Parliament by storm with a day of science, debate, and inspiration

Students from The Garibaldi School, part of Nova Education Trust, enjoyed an unforgettable visit to the Houses of Parliament, combining hands-on science with thought-provoking discussions on national issues and future careers.
The day began with an interactive chemistry workshop led by the Royal Society of Chemists, where students discovered the fun side of science through experiments such as making slime and competing in a carbon footprint challenge. These activities highlighted the importance of sustainability and innovation in modern science.
Following the workshop, the group embarked on a guided tour of Parliament, gaining a unique insight into its historic chambers and witnessing a live debate on defence and the Royal Air Force. This experience brought the workings of government to life for the students.
A highlight of the visit was an engaging Q&A session with Defence Minister Chi Onwurah, MP Steve Yemm, and representatives from the Royal Society of Chemists. Students asked challenging questions on topics ranging from career opportunities in defence and medicine to tackling racism and sexism in the workplace. They also explored the government’s approach to managing the environmental impact of AI technology and balancing innovation with sustainability.
One student even posed a direct question to the Defence Minister about the economic and security implications of new defence jets, as well as advice on pursuing careers with leading companies such as Rolls-Royce.
The day concluded with a memorable photo at the foot of Big Ben, marking an unforgettable experience for all involved. Students reflected on their visit with enthusiasm:
“I really enjoyed the morning event, especially making slime for the first time.”
“Learning where Sir William Wallace stood before the king was fascinating.”
“The highlight of the day was definitely doing the chemistry experiments and winning the carbon footprint competition!”
Nova Education Trust praised the visit as an example of its commitment to providing students with enrichment opportunities that broaden horizons and inspire future ambitions.
