Children at Kirkby school enjoy virtual pancake fun

Morven Park Primary School organised a virtual end of term pancake day activity.

Every year, the 500 pupil strong school, on School Street, arranges a pancake day race and fun activities in the playground.

All the children, from four to 11, get involved and the parents would come along to watch.

This year, due to the pandemic, it was not possible and Shrove Tuesday – official ‘pancake day’ – fell during the holidays, on February 16.

But ine of the teachers was determined the annual pancake celebration would not be a flop this year.

PE teacher Sam Geeson said: "We organised a virtual pancake challenge for the children and parents and staff joined in too. They had to go through the actions of stirring pancake batter, whisking and jumping in a circle, like a whisk, and then tossing a ‘pancake’ as many times as they could in a minute.

“It was a virtual event where the children in school and those at home could take part and see each other at the same time.

"We also invited the parents of the key worker and vulnerable children to join in, and many did or watched on a TEAMs call so they could see their children in school. Even our headteacher Mr Mark Watson joined in!

“All in all, it was great, everyone enjoyed themselves, we must have had about 250 people take part altogether, with the children and parents at home and small, socially distanced groups in the school hall, watching their friends on the big screen.

"It was great! Absolutely pan-tastic!”
