A group of employees from Amazon in Sutton-in-Ashfield spent the day volunteering at Portland Charity in Mansfield, refreshing and cleaning up the woodland area.

Portland Charity supports over 400 people with disabilities and autism annually to build a brighter future and encourage independent living. Their education and care programmes focus on three core themes of independence, health and well-being and employability.

A dozen Amazon employees worked in Portland Charity’s outdoor inclusive activity space, the Woodland Adventure Zone, clearing the area and adding new plants and equipment. Amazon has donated more than £5,000 to the charity in the past two years and continues to volunteer to maintain garden and classroom areas across the charity’s campuses in Mansfield and Nottingham City Centre.

Mark Dale, Group CEO at Portland Charity said: “On behalf of all the staff and volunteers at Portland Charity, we would like to say thank you to the Amazon team for their ongoing support with the volunteering activity. The group were fantastic, got stuck in straight away and made a real difference in just one day.”

Vivek Khanka, General Manager at Amazon in Sutton-In-Ashfield, added: “Portland Charity creates a fantastic environment for its students, helping them develop independence and employability skills. We’re proud of our ongoing partnership with the charity.”

Community donations and employee volunteering are just two of the ways Amazon supports the communities where it operates. Amazon co-founded the Multibank initiative with former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown to support families in need. The initiative has donated more than 8 million surplus goods to over 600,000 families across Scotland, Wales, Greater Manchester, London, Tees Valley and Birmingham. This year, the Multibank will send 1 million orders to families across the UK.

Amazon has supported more than one million students across the UK with free STEM education programmes through Amazon Future Engineer and helps community organisations transport meals and other essentials to families in need through its pro bono logistics programme, Amazon Local Good.

Amazon partners with Comic Relief and is the official home of the charity’s iconic Red Nose. Together with its employees, customers, and partners, Amazon has raised over £4.8 million to fund projects that support people across the UK, and around the world.
