Selston High School remembers

Selston High School students lay wreath and read poetry in memory of the fallen.
Selston High School is a school in Selston and a part of The Two Counties Trust. The school has been spending time in lessons teaching students on the values of Remembrance Day, while also planning a wreath laying at the Selston war memorial.
In preparation for this event Year 7, students spent time in lessons creating a paper wreath, meaning that students had a personal connection to the item that was laid at the memorial. As part of the English curriculum, students also crafted poems using the poppy as the inspiration for their poems.
On the morning of Tuesday, November 11, a group of students and staff made their way over to the Selston war memorial to spend a moments reflection on the sacrifices made by previous generations. The students in attendance brought with them their poems created in school and delivered them over the memorial.

After observing a moment of silence, both the paper wreath created by Year 7s and a more traditional poppy wreath was laid at the memorial.
One of the poems read at the service was written by Ruby in Year 7:
Upon the field where silence lies, beneath the wide endless skies. A sea of red fields wide, remembering those who fought for us.
Their petals flame, yet fall so light, a symbol born from grief and fight, they bow, they bend, but still they stand. Like whispers from another land.
Through summer winds, through autumn rain. They bloom with beauty touched by pain. In their glow, we pause, we stand in memory.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.
The whole school also observed a two-minute silence at 11am.
Speaking on the service, Assistant Headteacher Ross Mckinley said: "As always, I am immensely proud of Selston students for the reverence that they have shown during our lessons leading up to Remembrance Day. Once again it has been a privilege to accompany a group of students to the Selston war memorial and watch as our students conduct themselves with respect and compassion during this day of reflection."
After attending the memorial, Mya Year 7 said: "Remembrance Day is important to me because we need to remember the sacrifices that the soldiers made for us and remember why they did that for their country."
