International Men’s Day event success at ATTFE College

ATTFE College in Sutton in Ashfield held a men’s emotional health themed coffee morning to celebrate International Men’s Day at their Community Hub in the Idlewells Shopping Centre on November 18.
The event was hailed a huge success by all attending on the eve of the internationally recognised celebration. The purpose of the event was to encourage meaningful conversations around mental health and wellbeing through using “Say More Than OK” and “Never Say Never”to get an essential message across, that it’s good to talk.
Staff, learners, volunteers and members of the community attended to participate and show support.
It saw males from all backgrounds recognise the achievements, challenges, and humanity of men in our society, through talking about things they had found difficult, or had even never spoken about before.

Chris Binch, an ex-paratrooper and firefighter, now a well-known podcast host supporting mental health, shared powerful and meaningful stories of his time in service.
It was followed by a member of college staff sharing for the first time how he felt after experiencing a heart attack and two cardiac arrests. An emotional story unfolded of the fears and anxiety that followed these life-changing events. A volunteer spoke about his battle with cancer and how he beaten it.
Such amazing but relevant stories encouraged others in the audience to take part and share their own challenges and achieved what the morning was all about – getting people to show empathy, to listen and be open through talking.
It created an inclusive and supportive environment where men felt heard and valued.

Simon Martin MBE, Executive Leader at ATTFE College commented: “ATTFE College is committed to fostering a culture that supports positive mental wellbeing for all.We define mental wellbeing as the ability to realise one’s potential, manage everyday pressures, and thrive both personally and professionally.
"We aim to empower staff and learners to be creative, productive, and fully engaged in their work and studies. By prioritising wellbeing, we strengthen our community and contribute to the college’s continued success.”
Amazing and unique International Men’s Day cupcakes were given out, made by ATTFE College Butterfly Bakery.
