Resident aims to set up new hair salon at his Ashfield home

A new hair salon could soon be popping up in Ashfield after plans came to light to convert part of a domestic garage.

A planning application has been submitted to Ashfield District Council by a resident for a detached house on Mansfield Road in Skegby.

He wants to create the salon at the front of the property’s garage, which is currently used for storage, leaving the rear as a sun room.

In a planning statement sent to the council, he explains that his current business premises are up for sale and he wished to set up a salon from his home address.

"The (rented) premises are currently up for sale,” he says. “I have reason to believe that the new owners will wish to terminate my lease at the earliest opportunity or increase the rent significantly higher than it already is.

"In light of this, I have decided to make this application to enable me to work from home.

"This will enable me to continue in employment while reducing my costs and reducing the need to travel to work.

"The application will have no bearing on my neighbours or the surrounding area.”

The applicant says the hair salon would be open from 9.30am to 6pm on Mondays to Fridays and from 9 am to 4 pm on Saturdays. It would be closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

There would be just the one stylist, and appointments would be by prior arrangement only, with a 15-minute gap between each to avoid congestion.

The conversion would not require any “alterations to the existing structural size of the garage”, which sits 25 metres from the road, although its front door would be replaced by sliding doors in black uPVC.

The statement stresses that ample parking space would be available for customers on the existing front driveway of the house.

The council’s planning officers are currently considering the proposal and have set a deadline date of Monday, July 6 to make a decision or recommendation.
