Tomato Energy: British Gas taking on administration stricken energy supplier customers - what you need to do
British Gas is taking over thousands of energy accounts ⚡
- British Gas will take over the accounts of failed supplier Tomato Energy
- Around 15,300 households and 8,400 businesses are affected
- Energy supply continues as normal, with credit balances and price caps protected
- Customers will be contacted by British Gas and can switch suppliers without exit fees
- Tomato Energy had been under financial pressure, banned from new customers, and is set to appoint administrators
British Gas has been appointed to take on the customers of a recently collapsed energy supplier.
The move affects around 15,300 household and 8,400 business accounts that were previously with Tomato Energy, with the energy regulator Ofgem stepping in to manage the transition.
Tomato Energy had been under financial pressure for months. It was banned from taking on new customers in April after building up debts of £3 million and faced a proposed £1.5 million fine from Ofgem last month for failing to meet financial resilience rules. The company is expected to formally appoint administrators shortly.
But what does the news mean for Tomato Energy customers, and what do they need to do next to ensure the smooth transition of their energy supply? Here is everything you need to know about it.

What does it mean for customers?
Energy supplies for existing Tomato Energy customers will continue as normal once the switch to British Gas is complete.
Domestic customers will also remain protected under the energy price cap, and any credit balances held with Tomato Energy are safeguarded.
What do I need to do next?
Ofgem has confirmed that customers will be contacted in the coming days with details of the transfer.
Those who want to switch to a different supplier can do so, but it is advised to wait until the transition has been completed. No exit fees will apply for customers who decide to move to another provider.
Rohan Churm, Ofgem’s director for financial resilience and controls, said: “Minimising the disruption to customers is our top priority when a supplier exits the market, so I am pleased to confirm British Gas has been appointed to take on customers of Tomato Energy, and will work to move their accounts in the coming days and weeks.
Chris O’Shea, CEO of British Gas parent company Centrica, said that Tomato Energy’s collapse is part of a wider pattern, marking the 31st supplier to fail since 2021.
“We are proud to step up for Tomato Energy’s customers,” he said. “Their energy supply is secure, their credit balances will be protected, and we will make their transition to British Gas seamless.”
For Tomato Energy customers, the next steps are straightforward: monitor communications from British Gas, understand your new tariff, and consider your options once the switch is complete.
You are free to shop around for better deals without worrying about exit fees, giving you a clear path to choose the energy provider that works best for you.
