The historic department store on West Gate was one of 114 BHS branches across the country axed – along with 5,000 workers – after the high street company was put into administration back in 2016.

It was among a number of commercial property lots which went under the hammer at a property auctioneer and investment specialist Acuitus’ auction in London.

Units 32-36b West Gate, comprising the former BHS site and neighbouring Clarks shoe store, sold for £1.86 million, back in 2017.

Suggestions had been mooted to turn the three-storey building into an indoor market, but now signage for a Stock Monster, a bargain wholesale business has appeared.

The store, which sells everything from household items to hardware, DIY good, food, toys, bedding also has an outlet on Front Street, Arnold.
