Ashfield businesses urged to apply for financial support after council pays out £15m to struggling firms

Ashfield Council has already paid out £15m in business grants to help businesses in the district, but there are still businesses yet to claim their grants.

The council has received £22m funding from the government as part of its Small Business Rate Relief (SBBR) and Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grants.

The authority is now encouraging all eligible businesses who have received a letter from them and who’ve not yet applied to go to its website and complete the online form.

Hundreds of business have already applied for the grants, which has seen individual businesses awarded £10k for the SBBR Grant and up to £25k for the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant.

Councillor Mathew Relf, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “There are still numerous businesses in the district that we haven’t heard from. We want to make it clear to all eligible businesses that this is a grant and the money won’t have to be paid back.

“Council officers are busy contacting businesses that haven’t yet applied, and we encourage anyone who has received a letter or believes they are eligible to go to the council’s website and complete the online application form. The coronavirus outbreak has left dozens of business across our district struggling. Many have had to furlough staff and as a council, we are doing everything possible to support them.”

Coun Relf continued: “Once a business has completed the quick and easy application form, the information will be verified and processed and the funds paid into their bank account within a few days. If you have questions or queries please don’t hesitate to contact us, we are here to help and support local businesses. We know what worrying times these are for business owners and we will do everything we can to support you through these times.”

The council has also set up a dedicated email address to support businesses across the District. Anyone with any concerns can email [email protected].

Carrie Austin of Carrie Austin Photography has received financial assistance.

She said: “The grant means I don't have to worry about shutting the door of my studio until it is safe to reopen.”
