Apprenticeship laid foundation for career in construction

Carving out a career in the construction industry is proving to be the route to success for one man from Mansfield Woodhouse, who has landed a new role as Assistant Site Manager at Rippon Homes after originally joining the firm as an apprentice.

Jamie Cartwright (19) is now helping to oversee work at the Mansfield firm’s new development in Pontefract, after joining as a carpentry and joinery apprentice in August 2011.

Having successfully complete his apprenticeship and previously worked on a number of Rippon sites in Nottinghamshire, Jamie is now based at The Priory, on Ferrybridge Road, which is being transformed into 57 new homes.

Jamie comments: “I’m really pleased to have been given this new role and I am enjoying the new experiences and challenges that it brings.

“I have taken on a lot of new responsibilities and it is great to have the opportunity to meet new people and tackle new challenges every day, as well as managing people onsite.

“I enjoyed the apprenticeship and learnt a lot from being onsite, as opposed to just learning in the classroom.

“I think apprenticeships are great for helping young people learn a trade, as they excel a lot quicker when they are actually on the building site and putting into practice what they are learning.

“My Site Manager and the rest of the Rippon team were very supportive when I was undertaking my training.

“As Assistant Site Manager it is now part of my role to support and advise our current apprentices onsite, so it is nice to be able to give something back and help them to progress.

“ I’ve already worked my way up from being an apprentice and I hope to continue progressing within the company.

“Eventually I hope to become a Site Manager and be able to oversee the running of my own site.”
