Amazon set to create 1,000 jobs at new Sutton centre - and here's how to apply

Construction on the new 550,000 sq ft site began last year. It will be equipped with advanced Amazon Robotics technology. Robots will slide under a tower of shelves where products are stowed, lift it and move it through the fulfilment centre.

The company has started recruiting for a range of new roles for the fulfilment centre, including engineers, HR and IT professionals through to health and safety and finance specialists and operations managers.

Recruitment for the Amazon teams who will pick, pack and ship customer orders will begin later this month.

Jonatan Gal, Amazon’s director of UK customer fulfilment, said: “We are excited to continue our expansion in the UK’s East Midlands, creating a further 1,000 new permanent roles.

"As well as providing competitive wages and benefits from day one we have also invested heavily to create the most modern, high-tech and safest working environment for our employees.

“This new state-of-the-art robotics fulfilment centre is another sign of our commitment to the people and communities in which we operate, employing thousands of talented individuals in a diverse range of roles from operations managers and tech professionals through to our frontline employees who manage customer orders.”

Pay starts at £9.50 for all full-time, part-time, temporary and seasonal employees working in the company’s fulfilment centres, and Amazon also offers employees a Career Choice programme that provides funding for adult education, offering to pre-pay 95 per cent of tuition and associated fees for nationally recognised courses.

East Midlands Chamber deputy chief executive Diane Beresford added: “We all know the challenges facing the employment market right now so this is exactly the kind of positive announcement the region needs with high-quality jobs offering salaries well above the National Living Wage.

“The latest figures by the Office for National Statistics this week showed that the unemployment rate for April to June had risen by 0.6 per cent to 4.3 per cent compared to the previous quarter.

"Finding alternative employment for these people whose livelihoods have been affected by the economic crisis we find ourselves in is so important.

“As the world continues to shift towards online shopping, our region’s position in the centre of the country makes us a very desirable location for companies to invest in their logistics operations.

"We see this growing and innovative industry being a really key part of our economy as we come out of Covid-19 that should be wholeheartedly embraced by people in the East Midlands.”
