Wirksworth show for Police Dog Hogan

This is the latest gig at the venue to be put on by Town Hall Events.

With eight members in the full line-up and instruments including guitar, accordion, banjo, mandolin, fiddle and trumpet, Police Dog Hogan draw their influences from many different wells.

You could call it Americana, country-folk, folk-pop or even urban bluegrass, but it’s difficult to do justice to the sheer range of styles this band is willing to take on and, if necessary, transform. 

Their second album, From the Land of Miracles, attracted praise from many quarters. Their live shows are exuberant, accomplished, stirring and funny, mixing country-fried heartbreakers, belting anthems and foot-stomping singlaongs.

They’ve been a firm favourite on the festival circuit since forming in 2009, and have been playing to sell-out crowds across the country in the past year.

Their third album, Westward Ho!, produced by Oysterband’s Al Scott, was released on the Union Music Store label in autumn 2014.

n The Arkwright Society Lecture Series continues this week with a talk on John Whitehurst.

The location is Cromford Mills and the lecture gets under way at 7pm.

The cost is £7.50 (includes cheese and wine 7pm-7:30pm). There are limited places and advance booking is recommended.

Clockmaker, Lunar Society member and friend of the painter Joseph Wright, John Whitehurst lived and worked in Derby for over 40 years.

n Derby Concert Orchestra will perform their latest concert at regular venue St Mary’s Church, Wirksworth, on Saturday, May 16.

Conducted by Jonathan Trout, the first of the orchestra’s two concerts there this year will see them play Rossini’s Semiramide Overture, Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy and Sibelius’s Second Symphony.

The concert starts at 7.30pm.
