TONY ON TV: The clouds gather as Mr Selfridge bows out

On previous form, Ms Cole is almost certain to endure some pain from contestants when ‘The X Factor’ hogs the screens later this year, but real suffering is on view tomorrow as part of the build up to a weekend of Sport Relief.

TV presenter Davina McCall might annoy with her shrieking and gurning on ‘Big Brother,’ but she deserves a medal for her Edinburgh to London run, swim and cycle antics featured in ‘Davina: Beyond Breaking Point’ at 9pm on BBC1. This marathon effort -- during which she was hauled out of a freezing Lake Windermere during an open-water swim -- will probably be mentioned during Friday’s line-up of sport and entertainment stars all focused on the biennial ‘Sport Relief,’ which aims to bring the nation together to get active, have fun and raise cash to help vulnerable people in both the UK and the world’s poorest countries.

The main broadcast part of this three-day event gets underway on BBC1 at 7pm as TV favourites, including Gary Lineker (who fronted the first Sport Relief in 2002), David Walliams, Claudia Winkleman, Jack Whitehall and Fearne Cotton, present an extravaganza of original sketches, special celebrity performances and highlights from this year’s challenges.

This includes comedian John Bishop and four-time Olympic medal-winner Sebastian Coe urging their teams to sporting victory, while down in Peckham there’s an important visitor as David Beckham drops in on Del Boy (David Jason) and Rodney (Nicholas Lyndhurst) for some special comic capers in a one-off edition of ‘Only Fools And Horses’ back on the screens after a 10-year absence.

That also might be the sentence facing Deputy Chief Constable Dryden (Mark Bonnar) who looks like getting his collar felt in the final episode of ‘Line of Duty’ (BBC2, tonight), but all may not be as it seems as the team exposes a vicious, criminal gang run from within the force putting them are on the trail of ‘The Caddy.’ Let’s hope there’s a third series of this fast-paced drama, something that’s already in the bag for ‘Mr Selfridge’ (ITV1, Sunday), which ends the current series in mixed mood as the store marks its fifth birthday as the storm clouds gather for World War I.

On a lighter note, fans of Nigella Lawson’s hit-and-miss cookery series ‘The Taste’ can see how it was done originally Stateside in ‘The Taste USA’ on Sunday evenings on More4, while TLC’s ‘My Strange Addiction’ (Tuesday) checks up on folk who like eating cat hair or plastic bags or drinking paint. It makes me think that ‘The Taste’ was not all that bad after all.
