Studio has treats galore for the summer

Derby Theatre’s summer season in the venue’s Studio has plenty to entice theatregoers of all ages.

Season highlights in the Studio include Joan, a Derby Theatre production, a powerful one-woman show which looks at the life of Joan of Arc through the medium of a Drag King cabaret. Joan, part of the RETOLD series, which explores classic plays from the perspective of key female characters, is on from July 16-18.

Every Brilliant Thing, one of the hits from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last year presented by Paines Plough, is a quirky show which lists everything brilliant about the world, on from June 26-27 and Tamasha’s production of Blood by Emteaz Hussain, a heartfelt new play directed by Esther Richardson from June 19-20.

Other Studio shows include: Backdown, on May 1, by Birmingham Repertory Theatre Company in association with The Roundhouse; Plastic Figurines, on May 9, by Box Of Tricks; We Can Be Heroes, on May 29, by Sometimes We Play, in association with LittleMighty; Get a Round, on May 30, by Eggs Collective; From the Cradle to the Bin, on June 5, by A Ship of Fools Theatre Company; and Vanity Bites Back, on June 12, by Helen Duff.

For children and young people at Derby Theatre, participatory opportunities include: Youth Theatre for ages 8 – 19; Young Technicians for young people aged 11 – 19 who are looking for technical hands-on experience in theatre; Theatre Thinkers, a group who work together with our Creative Learning Associate to decide on how we can make Derby Theatre more exciting and relevant for young people; Free Fun Drama Workshop, a high energy physical workshop for 14 – 19 year olds and the Derby Theatre Summer School, a week of learning skills and creating a performance during the summer holidays.

We’ll be presenting the next in Derby Theatre’s RETOLD series of plays, after the success of Penelope RETOLD we return with Joan, a show which looks at the life of Joan of Arc through the medium of a Drag King cabaret.
