Review: Sex in Suburbia at Chesterfield’s Winding Wheel

Sex in Suburbia is a low-rent, unsophisticated take on the Sex in the City dating disasters.

It’s the difference between necking cider in Chesterfield to sipping Mojitos in Manhattan.

Billed as a comedy, it should come with an X-rated warning.

Adult toys put on show by Annie the sexpert demonstrator in one sketch and the flash of a man’s bare bum in another gave cause for howls of laughter at Chesterfield’s Winding Wheel last night (Sunday, March 8).

The Bad Date gameshow - in which Claire Sweeney, star and co-writer of Sex in Suburbia tried out her best Cilla Black impression on women from Hasland, Alfreton and Ripley - proved as unpredictable as a house party flogging Ann Summers bedroom novelty items as the consenting adults shared their secrets in return for goody bags.

Under the guise of a radio phone-in programme, dating nightmares were played out by charismatic Claire, husky-voiced Lindzi Germain and versatile Carl Patrick.

Top scorers were the wife who came home to find her hubby dressed as a woman and the vain attempts of a frustrated spouse to seduce her footie-mad husband.

Songs with the lovely Claire as lead vocalist had viewers swaying in their seats, punching the air and on their feet by the end of the night.

While the Winding Wheel audience lapped up the innuendos and tittered all night, this was one comedy date that I’d rather forget.

If this sounds like your bag, catch this saucy show at Mansfield Palace Theatre on March 18 and Buxton Opera House on March 26.
