Play based oncop scandal

Nottingham Playhouse has announced a brand new commission for 2016, Any Means Necessary, written by Kefi Chadwick.

In 2011, it came to light that an undercover police spy had been living amongst Nottingham activists for years, not only spying on legitimate protest groups but also engaging long term relationships with women in their undercover persona.

Dismissed by police as a ‘rogue officer’ it soon became clear that  undercover police had been spying on activists, having relationships and even fathering children with the women they duped for decades, fully sanctioned and funded by Special Branch.

Inspired by interviews with many of those involved and with unprecedented access to the women and legal teams involved, Any Means Necessary is a fictionalised account of what happened, how the abuse was perpetrated, the emotional costs and the women’s drive to find out the truth about the men they thought they knew.

Chadwick said: “This case shows an incredible abuse of human rights and civil liberties and is one of the biggest police scandals of all time.

“To be able to bring the events to life on the stage at Nottingham where one of the worst offenders lived and spied is a great privilege.”

Any Means Necessary, directed by Giles Croft, is at the Nottingham Playhouse from Friday February 5 until February 20.
