Orwell’s tale returns to the Playhouse

It will be given a second run at Nottingham Playhouse, from September 9-26, ahead of a run in Bath and thentour to Australia and the USA.

Adapted from George Orwell’s book by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan, this award-winning show originally premiered at Nottingham Playhouse, in 2013.

This hugely successful production has now been seen by over a quarter of a million people and is currently playing to packed house at London’s Playhouse Theatre for the second time, where the show will run until September 5.

Filtering the spirit and the ambition of the novel through the lens of contemporary culture, this radical new staging for the first time is informed by the appendix of Orwell’s definitive book, as it explores surveillance culture, identity and how thinking you can fly might actually be the first step to flying.

George Orwell’s 1984, published in 1949, is one of the most influential novels in recent history, with its chilling depiction of perpetual war, pervasive government surveillance and incessant public mind control. Its ideas have become our ideas and Orwell’s fiction is often said to be our reality.
