Judy Garland play to premiere in Nottingham

A touching new play that explores the joy and heartache of hero worship is premiering at the Nottingham Playhouse at the end of the month.

My Judy Garland Life is based on the autobiographical memoir of critically acclaimed author Susie Boyt and has been adapted for the stage by Nottingham-born playwright Amanda Whittington.

It tells how Susie became enthralled by Judy Garland as a child and how the troubled star becomes someone Susie can confide in, care for and be consoled by.

Judy’s heart-stopping blend of joy and anguish helps Susie with her own personal troubles, ultimately bringing her through her darkest days.

Susie’s book was serialised on Radio 4 and extracted in American Vogue.

Cast in the role of Judy is musical theatre star Sally Ann Triplett, who has appeared in numerous West End productions and herself is a Judy Garland fan.

She said: “I always knew I wanted to perform from a very early age and my parents would sit me down in front of the telly any time an MGM film was on, so my love for Judy began a long time ago.

“It’s a time in history I wish I had been born in and so it feels almost full circle to be playing the lady herself. It’s a daunting task but something I am incredibly excited about.”

Kath Rogers is directing My Judy Garland Life and said she was excited to be working on a completely original take on the Judy Garland story.

“We see Judy’s life through the eyes of a young girl who seeks solace in the songs we know and love and we’re delighted to have one of our best-loved musical theatre stars in the title role,” she said.

“Her joy, heart and spirit will bring Judy spectacularly to life at Nottingham Playhouse.

“We’re over the moon – and the rainbow – to have her.”

The play is being performed from Friday 31st January until Saturday 15th February.
