Cleaning ladies’ dirty secret

When you’re about to be laid off and need more cash quick, some people think of very ‘innovative’ ways of how to boost their income.

The three cleaning ladies in the hilarious show Dirty Dusting, which comes to Mansfield Palace Theatre later this month, are such people.

Gladys, Elsie and Olive are about to be ‘put out to pasture’ by their overzealous office manager Dave.

Feeling they have little chance of gaining employment elsewhere, the ladies desperately try to think of some other money-making plan.

Then, when somebody mistakenly calls the office wanting a sex chat line, they are given the great idea of having a go at creating their own!

They decide their age and appearance won’t matter on the telephone and think that providing they can keep this a secret from their boss, they could be onto a winner.

They start up The Telephone Belles – A Dirty Sex Chat Line that really cleans up!

Needless to say, things don’t go entirely according to plan, leading to some funny situations that will have you rolling in the aisles.

Written by Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood, Dirty Dusting stars Crissy Rock, from the hit TV shows Benidorm and I’m A Celebrity, Pat Dunn from TV programme Hebburn and comedienne and actress Leah Bell, who also directs the production.

Jason Jones, also from Hebburn, appears as Dave.

The humour in the play is, of course, a bit on the vulgar side, but it is full of witty one-liners that come thick and fast throughout.

However there is more to Dirty Dusting than just crude jokes - it also explores other pertinent issues such as society’s attitude to older people and ageism and issues on relationships and the effects this can have on individuals.

The writers themselves have described it as ‘a searing indictment of ageism in the 21st Century heavily disguised as a hysterical, laugh-out-loud, heartwarming comedy’.

And it has proved very popular with audiences.

After premiering in February 2003 it has toured Britain and even been out to New Zealand and Australia.

It is being performed at Mansfield Palace Theatre on Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th October at 7.30pm.

Tickets for the show are being snapped up, with the audience guaranteed and are priced at £20.50 all seats.

To book, call the Box Office on Mansfield 633133 or book online at www.mansfield.gov.uk/palacetheatre.
