Review: Golden greats shine in Bluecoat concert

Staged at St.Patrick’s Church Hall in the village, the Pure Gold extravaganza served as the perfect gift to Spencer and Millie ahead of their golden wedding anniversary in August.

Rich in talent, the Bluecoat Singers, led by musical director Lynda Harvey, and accompanied by John Sanders, turned on the style, with Spencer playing his part both in the tenor section and as compere.

Spencer, who has been an invaluable asset to the company during an involvement spanning 32 years, was in fine form in his familiar compere’s role, providing a wealth of laughs with his amusing anecdotes, and factual information, not to mention his clever asides.

The 30-strong mixed choir made a big impression in a programme that included show classics, opera favourites and chart-topping hits.

A fabulously re-arranged Flash Bang Wallop number from Half a Sixpence, devised by John Dick, was a winner while Stephen Godward and Kenneth Tagg hit the mark with their ancient and modern take on the Battle of Waterloo, which was hilarious.

A rousing rendition of Cabaret, South Pacific’s Nothing Like a Dame, and a finale number Alexander’s Ragtime Band set the seal on a magical concert performance.

Bluecoat’s chairman Noel Jervis and stalwart Pam Lenton presented Spencer and Millie with gifts and applauded their involvement and commitment to the local community.

“They are a special couple who have enriched the lives of many with their talents,” they said.
