NSO’s four French fancies

The concert gets under way at 7.30pm, will be conducted by Derek Williams, and features a brace of works each by two contrasting but hugely gifted French composers - Hector Berlioz and Claude Debussy.

The concert opens with Berlioz’s lively Le Corsaire Overture, followed by the cool, revolutionary, peaceful sounds of Debussy’s Prelude De L’Apres-Mid D’Un Faun.

The same composer’s three-movement work La Mer is a multi-faceted, highly descriptive piece depicting the many moods of the sea and is one of his best compostions.

The other work in the concert will see NSO, who have been described by the Sunday Telegraph Magazine as “arguably the premier amateur orchestra in Britain,” teaming up with talented Australian soloist Ann Beilby, who plays viola in the award-winning Cavaleri String Quartet.

She will be the viola soloist in Berlioz’s symphonic work Harold In Italy, an exciting, passionate, romantic and ultimately uplifting composition that provides the perfect showcase for the Frenchman’s talents.
