Illustrated talk by Chris Weir on "Lace, Slums and the Occasional Riot - the Making of Victorian Nottingham"

Chris Weir is formerly Notts Archivist and now lectures and writes on local history. His talk will detail how Nottingham transformed from Daniel Defoe's description as "one of the most pleasant towns in England" to a major industrial city. It will follow the fortunes of the hosiery and lace industries which created great wealth but also poverty, riots and crime. Narrow Marsh and Broad Marsh became underworlds, riddled with disease, recognisable to Oliver Twist. Chris will refer to characters such as Bendigo, and the entertainments open to the city's Victorian inhabitants.

The venue is Kimberley Community Room, Newdigate Street, accessed from the driveway to Kimberley Sports Centre. There is plenty of parking almost opposite. Visitors are welcome, for a cost of £4 (cash) towards expenses.
