Inspirational exhibition in Buxton

The exhibition will be opened by the Mayor of Buxton at a reception at 2pm on Monday, October 5, and the exhibition will be open to visitors each day from 10.30am to 4.30pm, from October 5-9.

This Light that Pushes Me features photographs of peacebuilders from sub-Saharan Africa, all of whom are involved with Quaker work and all of whom have experienced violence.

The exhibition tells the stories of these men and women and their determination to transform their experience of suffering into a force for social change. The exhibition was first launched in 2014 to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide.

Quakers from Buxton, Bakewell, New Mills and Disley are involved in the project, which takes place during both National Quaker Week and Black History Month.

A Disley Quaker said: “I first saw this moving exhibition in Bath last summer. Looking into the faces in the photos I think we can all recognise something of ourselves. We are so grateful to the Chaplaincy of the University of Derby for working with us in bringing the exhibition to Buxton.”

Ingrid Keith, chaplaincy co-ordinator at the Dome added: “When so much of the international news is pretty bleak, to be able to share the stories of how these inspirational people helped to bring peace out of their own suffering with staff and students at the University is a truly uplifting way to celebrate Black History Month.”
