In character for a cool show

It’s a family favourite that has been entertaining the crowds for more than three decades but this year’s Disney On Ice is still drawing huge crowds of excited fans to enjoy its magic and sparkle.

And for good reason - it is a colourful, fast-moving ice spectacular that provides fun entertainment for the whole family.

This year’s show – Worlds of Enchantment – hosted by Mickey, Minnie and friends, has sets from Toy Story, Little Mermaid, Cars and, the one many fans had been waiting for, Disney’s hit show Frozen.

My children’s favourite started the show as we were taken into the larger than life world of Buzz Lightyear, Woody and Slinky which sees the Toy Story characters sent off to a new home until they are rescued by Barbie from the ‘baddie’ Ken.

Our show then skates off to the colourful underwater world of the Little Mermaid before taking the wheels onto the ice as characters from Cars entertain the crowds with their flaming synchronised moves.

Finally it’s off into the cold as the staging and lighting magically turns the arena stage into the Frozen land of Arendelle. The biggest cheer of the night came as Olaf the snowman skated onto the ice. For me this was the highlight of the show, maybe because it has a more understandable story and popular tunes but also because of the characters’ stunning performances.

Throughout the show, the dancing is spectacular - it’s sometimes hard to remember that these are real people on the ice, many wearing cumbersome character costumes while completing more amazing moves than would grace the Saturday night Strictly ballroom.

It helps if you’re a Disney fan - or a mum or dad of one - so you can get into the show’s spirit; and if you go without someone under the age of ten you may be in the minority.

One note of caution, if you’re planning to let your little ones visit the merchandise stall while your there, you may need to take a rather large wallet.

But the question of “please can we go next year?” as we queued to leave the Sheffield Arena car park afterwards probably shows how much the younger members of our household enjoyed it. I’d better get booking those tickets!
