Halle players get their chance to shine in this modern masterpiece

The Manchester-based orchestra regularly visits the city and its concert are always eagerly awaited.

This latest concert will be conducted by Cristian Macelaru.

It gets under way at 7.30pm and features three works.

To start with, there is Dvorak’s fizzing Carnival Overture, a joyous piece from a composer who was approaching the top of his game when he wrote it.

Then there is Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 2, featuring soloist Francesco Piemontesi.

This is an early masterpiece that was influenced by the style of Mozart.

Finally, there is Bela Bartok’s Concerto For Orchestra.

Written in 1943 when the ailing Hungarian composer had moved to America, this is a virtuosic, colourful work that gives all sections of the orchestra a chance to shine.
