Couples come in all varieties: from wildly romantic to completely platonic; from magical and mysterious to business-like, matter-of-fact, working partnerships; from the caring-and-sharing to the out-and-out warring.

This year’sconcert explores the full breadth of the theme through a sparkling selection of tunes played by Derby-based professional orchestra Sinfonia Viva, with connections explained and pieces introduced by returning conductor James Holmes, joined for vocal selections by soloists Oliver Johnston (tenor), Rosalind Coad (soprano) and members of the Big Adventures Youth Theatre Company.

The programme includes Glinka’s bustling Russlan and Ludmilla Overture, the Montagues And Capulets from Prokofivev’s Romeo and Juliet, plus Tonight from the beloved musical West Side Story, inspired by the same source material as Prokofiev’s ballet.

Shakespeare also provided Mendelssohn with the inspiration for the ever-popular Wedding March from A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

There’s also a selection from Gershwin’s dramatic opera Porgy and Bess, the March of the Siamese Children from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical The King And I, the overture from Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates Of Penzance and an extract from Puccini’s opera, to name just a few.

Car parking is £5 at St.Benedict’s School on Duffield Road (2pm - 11pm) and also £5 from 3pm at Derby Rugby Club.
