Exile Fest, which takes over Sabine Hay, near Darley Dale, this weekend, will feature groups such as Project Jam Sandwich, a world music quintet which started playing together a year ago.

The classically-trained five-piece band spent 18 months exploring different sounds and fusing them together. Cellist Abel Selaocoe said: “We love mixing different sounds and exploring creating new ones such as transposing the sound of a Mongolian flute on the cello.”

Project Jam Sandwich will be supporting local popular bands, like A52s, which get the festival goers up and dancing. The Parwich-based seven-piece A52s specialise in folk rock and play a mix of covers and original material. Their song Jackdaw Crow, written by Jim Croft about Derbyshire hills, will be on the band’s upcoming CD which is due for release in September.

Other acts performing include festival favourites Shamus O’Blivion and the Megadeath Morrismen, A Harp and a Monkey, DH Lawrence Skiffle group, Red Ruff, Heartless Tarts, Hiveminds, the Rotten Hill Gang, Disco Misfits and Eliza P.

Exile Fest was launched in Belper by Andy Martin and Paul Robins and moved to its privately owned site near Matlock in 2009. The founders started with a local council grant and amanged to keep the festival going each year on a shoestring budget, depending heavily on the support and help of local volunteers.

The festival opens on Friday night. Weekend tickets for adults are £55, £35 for under 18s and concessions. To book, contact www.belpermusicfestival.org.uk
