AN Army bomb squad has made safe a suspect package discovered at a Mansfield church on Friday morning.

The alarm was raised at 8.45am after a taped up package was found on the steps of the Methodist Church on Bridge Street.

Police closed off Bridge Street and Toothill Lane, while parts of the St Peter's Way ring were shut - sparking long tailbacks on the main arteries into the town.

Shops and businesses in the area were also evacuated as a precaution before a controlled explosion was carried out on the package, which police say was not suspicious.

Probably a clothes or food bundle without a label on it.

obviously a practical joke. why hasnt someone got the sense to have a look at these "suspicious" packages rather than get the bonb unit out straight away?

i mean, let's face it. who in their right mind would bomb mansfield? if you're a terrorist who wants to cause a commotion, you'll pick a major city not a town most folks have never heard of!

I'm sure the people of Exeter, Guildford or Warrington never expected their home towns to be targets through one 'cause' or another!!
