TALKING CCTV cameras are now up and running in Mansfield and other parts of the district as part of the ongoing battle against yobbish behaviour.
Twenty hi-tech cameras have been installed at locations in the town centre, Mansfield Woodhouse and Warsop –– and have already proved a success in preventing fights, dispersing loitering youths, tackling litterbugs and stopping people urinating in the street.

And delighted council chiefs say there has been a good response to the new cameras, with most folk willing to comply with what operators are saying to them.

Said Mansfield District Council's portfolio holder for public protection Coun Danny McCrossan: "The continuous improvement of the already very successful CCTV system we have in Mansfield will go a long way in helping with the fight against crime.

"The speakers and the digital technology that we now have are being used to their full potential so hopefully we will now see a further reduction in crime in the Mansfield district."

Mansfield's CCTV system has also changed from using video tapes to a digital recording system, to bring it up to date and allowing immediate playback and rapid search facilities.

The previous system used 64 video tapes a day and council chiefs said it took a long time for police officers to search through.

And are the talking CCTVs cutting down Anti Social Behaviour and Crime Froggie? I think not... 'Now now young man don't steal that old ladies purse!' Guffaw! CCTV I am all for them it is a good tool, but talking cctv.... hmmm.... as pointless as Eggo's ornamental balls on the market place that have now appeared to have dropped. Talking CCTV and Plastic Policemen were doing well....

CCTV was introduced in the 80's under the banner of "reducing crime", 20+ years on and violent crime in Mansfield is worse now ! CCTV is no detterent at all whatsoever - its just a mechanism of monitoring everybodies movements so the authorities know EXACTLY what you are doing - Another step towards Orwells horrific vision of a global facist superstate - but yet were sold it by the bucket and continue to "buy" the official story of "protecting you" - utter rubbish!

Croceus, that's quite some conspiracy theory. I know for a fact that there are so many regulations governing CCTV (where it is used properly such as by local authorities) that your vision of having your every move watched is massively OTT. With so many nutters around in the world today I feel a lot more comfortable that these cameras are around, afterall if you're doing nowt wrong you've got nowt to worry about.

And another thing! Because crime has risen since cameras were bought in, are you suggesting they are some how to blame? Or more likely, is that crimes that were going unreported before are now being spotted by these cameras and acted upon. Thats got to be a good thing.

Well said girls . . . boy are there some paranoid people out there, some with stuck record players too. It's all doom and gloom on here.

Croceus Laurus... Tin foil hat stuff I am afraid. Millbrook is open 7 days a week 24 hours a day I am told. It is not supposed to be a deterrent, it is supposed to be a tool and a useful tool indeed it is. They catch me on CCTV blowing my nose as many times they wish but as for talking CCTV, hmmm, pointless. I want CCTV Cameras everywhere, not talking ones, not plastic bobbies either. Every street corner, cul de sac, drive, lane and avenue should have manned cctv.
