MANSFIELD golden girl Rebecca Adlington is one of the bookies' favourites to win this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year. But does she have the support of her hometown?
We hit the streets of Mansfield this week to check whether townsfolk will be voting for the double-gold Olympic champion on 14th December.

To watch the video, either click the green 'play' icon or click the screen on the right.

Although the shortlist has not yet been announced, Becky is expected to be going head to head with Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton, previous Sports Personality winner Joe Calzaghe and fellow Olympic gold medalist Chris Hoy.

How will you be voting? Leave your comment below.

Has to be Becky surely for those of us from Mansfield . . . though if I was Chris Hoy |would think 'what have I got to do to win it' . . . but Lewis Hamilton will win it.

SO WE REWARD LOSERS??????.....Hatton`s great, but he did lose against "Whatshisname"

Hamilton`s also very good, but come on,so would I be if I was getting the dosh he gets. Also, how many times this season has he had points/places deducted????
That means he hasnt followed the rules. In other words "Cheated".

How much more of the PERFECT Athlete can ANYONE be than Becky?????????

She should win it by MILES & MILES & MILES!!!!!

Ricky Hatton? Ricky Hatton? What? He's not even been Britain's best boxer this month, let alone this year.

In my personal opinion, and I'm stating the bloody obvious, but it's between three - Becky, Hamilton and Hoy. My heart says Becky, but my head says Hamilton.

Sports Personality? She needs to get a personality first. I've been to 3 events for her, the first one at the Civic Centre all she could talk about was wanting to get to the free food. The second was the open top bus ride through Mansfield where she couldn't be bothered to stand up and wave to the crowd and the third was to acknowledge sporting excellence in Mansfield and award her the freedom of the town. This was a black tie event. She was the only person that couldn't be bothered to make herself presentable, turned up in jeans and didn't want to have her photo taken.
Sports personality? Certainly not Adlington, I'll vote for Hoy but Hamilton will win it.

Well, well, well . . . I'm shocked that it's taken a full day for one of Mansfield's famous moaners to appear!!
Your a typical Brit, DJ - build them up and knock them down . . .

DD, as far as I'm concerned Adlington knocked herself down with her attitude, she doesn't need help from me or anybody else! Different attitude, different response from quite a few people, including letter writers to the chad.
Rebecca should take a look at Sam Hynd and learn. He too is an olympic gold medal winner and world record holder but no chip on his shoulder. I'd vote for Sam Hynd in Sports Personality every time.

I suggest you attend one of the events that Adlington is at, if there are any more because she aint the flavour of the month. Then decide if you still want to vote for her.

I went to a pre-Olympic dinner organised by the Armchair Club, the bus parade and the private party at the Civic just hours later. Granted, the point about her on the bus I can't argue with and I don't dispute your comments about Sam. But at the end of the day she's a 19-year-old girl who's brought immense credit to the town where I was born and bred. Perhaps some of the 19-year-old kids with ASBOs to their name and lengthy criminal records in this town should take note. Give me Becky over those waste of spaces any day.

We must ask ourselves this, is she a great sportsperson or just a very lucky one? If she had lived in London, or even Nottingham she would be long since forgotten about. She is still being remembered not so much for her achievement in Bejjing, but for being the "face of Mansfield". Eggington wants people to hear her name and think "oh, Mansfield can't be so bad if she lives there" he's not going to tell you about how she had to travel each day alongside her schooling, to Nottingham to train due to lack of public facilities in Mansfield is he?

Look at the Yates fiasco, that never lasted did it once her parents opposed their daughter's name being used to sell foods a highly fit olympic athlete like Rebecca would not even think about eating.

She seems a very calm, friendly person and I don't have a bad word to say about her person, but I do think MDC and Eggington need to butt out before she sells out.
