THE streets of Mansfield could become a booze-free zone under hard-hitting new proposals being considered by councillors.
A working group of councillors wants to give strict new powers to police and neighbourhood wardens so they can seize alcohol from troublemakers in any public place in a bid to slash levels of anti-social behaviour.

Mansfield District Council's Select Commission Two has been investigating the problem for a number of months and will hold a public meeting next week for local folk to have their say on its proposals.

Said group chairman Coun Tom Appleby: "When we started looking at this issue, we were looking in the broadest sense because we'd had a lot of complaints from people of all ages right across the district.

"It is not people drinking in public that people are worried about — it is people overdrinking in public. It gives the police powers if people are causing problems to say they have had enough and send them on their way.

"We are not trying to have a blanket ban on drinking but want to have the ability to address problems and troublemakers.

"This is not some 'big brother' draconian measure. At the end of the day, the police haven't got any more staff and we haven't got any more staff — it is just giving them more powers. It will enable the police and wardens to deal with a very small minority of people."

He said police had initially identified five areas where an order could be brought in –– focusing on the town centre and various parks but, after looking into the issue, councillors were concerned it would just move the problem to other areas.

The draft report says this had taken place when wardens had challenged anti-social drinking in Titchfield Park, which then subsequently 'displaced' the problem to the Commercial Gate car park, Littleworth and the Quarry Lane Nature Reserve where they could not tackle it.

After the public meeting, a final report will be produced giving the recommendations of the group.

  • The public meeting takes place at Mansfield Civic Centre next Wednesday (16th) at 6pm.

I'm sure this issue was raised at the 'Public Consultation' (sic) at Fawlty Towers late 2007, only to be discounted primarily by the Police, and worse still, discounted by senior Councillors present.
What comes around, comes around.
Essentially there is the litter issue but on-street drinking is most off-putting. Witness the young man with Stella wandering around the Market at 11 this morning.

I am all for Free Booze in Mansfield!!

What we want to get rid of is the trouble makers and the hooligans that's all. I have no problem with anybody that is drinking outside a pub. We used to do it and never caused any bother. You just get the odd idiots that spoil it for the majority and they, the trouble makers, need dealing with.

I don't agree with gangs of kids lurking on the parks and streets with tins of booze by no means that also needs nipping in the bud, but why stop people drinking outside pubs because there is a minority of mindless morons?

There's a guy in his 60's who walks past with his wife each day at 8:50AM with a can of special brew. He causes no trouble, but I do question the need to be drinking alcohol that early. Maybe it's because he can.

While I would not support drinking in public I don't see how you can have two levels of tollerence. Either you ban it or allow it.

By asking police officers to use discretionary powers you are actually creating problems. Try telling a drunk why he can't drink but the nice family having a pic nic can. It's a sure recipie for disaster.

The police already have powers to deal with people that are causing trouble. It's called a breach of the peace. Why complicate matters?

If the police didn't have the man power before, they won't get it just because you give them another power. Spend the money on extra constables (not powerless immitations) and the problem will go away.
