SHERWOOD MP Paddy Tipping has given his backing to local pig farmers caught up in the current crisis facing the British pig industry.
This week he paid a visit to Wellow pig farmer Andrew Baugh as part of a series of meetings arranged by 'The Pigs Are Worth It' campaign, which is calling for farmers to receive a fairer price for their animals.

Mr Tipping has been actively involved in the campaign and is also a member of the Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee, which recently held an inquiry into the industry.

Farmers say they are struggling because the high cost of feed over the past year has caused the industry to lose over £150m.

Said Mr Baugh: "If we do not get a fairer distribution of costs throughout the supply chain soon, many may still face the prospect of going out of business.

"That means consumers will lose the choice to buy higher welfare Quality Standard Mark pork, bacon, sausages and ham."
