SOLDIERS from the Mercian Regiment exercised their freedom of the district today by marching through Mansfield's town centre.
Around 80 troops from the 2nd Battalion of the Mercian Regiment marched from West Gate to the Old Town Hall, following their return from Afghanistan.

Yesterday's parade was brilliant. I managed to sneak a spot in the crowds and even though I don't have any direct links with the regiment, it was really emotional to see them walking through town - applauded and cheered by local people.

It really does make you proud.

The Mansfield (and surrounding districts) people did ‘Our Boys’ proud yesterday, well done to all concerned, it was a day that I’ll never forget. The silence during the Ceremony was impeccably observed despite there being many hundreds of people in the Market Place. You could feel the love, pride and admiration coming from the crowds as they applauded. And what a laugh it was to see my little dog on the film. Ralph was proud to be dressed in his patriotic coat to salute the Soldiers with his paw! – I ought to get a life really didn’t I?

I was really pleased to see the turn out for the soldiers parade yesterday. My husband is in the Army and although not based with the Mercian Regiment I do support all the troops and it was great to see them made so welcome. They appreciate it so much. Remember, the British Army is the best Army in the world.

My son is a proud member of the Mercian Regiment and a Mansfield lad. It was great to see the soldiers marching in Mansfield and treated with such respect by local people.
