MANSFIELD mayor Mr Egginton said he was 'absolutely delighted' about the continuing success of the Independents — but would urge those members newly elected to the county council to stand down from the district council.
"I have always said that I don't think people can twin-track," he said after six Independents were elected onto Nottinghamshire County Council for the first time on Friday, helping the Conservatives to wrestle power from Labour.

"I think they have got to have an allegiance. Maybe we will see some by-elections at local level.
"I don't think anybody can take on two jobs. It will be their own decision but I will certainly be putting the pressure on.
"I said exactly what I thought before they put their names forward so they know where I am coming from."

Coun Barry Answer, who leads Mansfield Independent Forum on the district council, said he was delighted with the election results.
"I think it is fantastic news for the Independent Forum and fantastic news for the people of the district," he said.
"What people are saying is that they want more of what they are getting in the district.
"They want people before politics. They want people who are honest, open and transparent and really do care, keeping politics totally out of it."
