MANSFIELD'S famous railway viaduct has been announced as local folks' second favourite attraction in the area following an internet vote.
The two-month Pride of Mansfield poll on Mansfield District Council's website allowed users to choose their favourite from 10 local attractions, including A Spire for Mansfield –– the towering stainless feather on West Gate, Mansfield Museum and Titchfield Park.

The imposing structure, which has dominated the town's skyline since the 1870s, finished second to Warsop's Carrs Local Nature Reserve, which was the runaway winner after claiming more than half the votes.

Click on the green icon to see Mansfield District Council's portfolio holder for regeneration Kate Allsop explain why she's a big fan of the viaduct.

This is the second instalment in our 'Pride of Mansfield' series, which takes a look at our pick of the local landmarks and beauty spot on offer across the district.

For the other episodes in the series so far, choose from below:

Episode One: The Carrs Nature Reserve

Episode Three: Carr Bank Park

Eric Hill,

Warsop 10/12/2007 18:37:52
I think it an absolute disgrace that the Chad and MDC are promoting and glamorising the runner up in this competition rather than the winner. The winner by an astonising margin was The Carrs at Warsop. The Carrs scored the 3rd highest percentage score in the whole countries Pride of Place awards and you are promoting a very poor second place. this is just another example of Warsop being totally brushed to one side (again) within the Mansfield District. Surely the voting speaks for itself. The Chad, MDC and Mr Eggonface ought to be totally ashamed of yourselfs

I agree Carrs is a terrific, natural local resource and well deserves its win. The fact that it obtained such a high percentage of votes is due to local feeling on its importance to the community; something that was reflected in the pro Carrs turnout 2 years ago when a small band of people sought to prevent its Nature Reserve status. (For what end we may never know.) Sadly the Chad and MDC clearly do not see Warsop as part of the Mansfield District and worthy of recognition.

Whether this is true or not but there was rumours some time ago that there were a number of spots in Mansfield and Warsop being talked of to be sold off to raise money. One was Carr Bank Park and the other was the Carrs at Warsop. How true this rumour is one never knows but we shall wait and see but there never is smoke without fire.

Smoo,

Warsop 10/12/2007 21:11:12
I heard a rumour (admittedly a rumour and unconfirmed in any way) that certain MDC councillors had requested that The Carrs be removed from the competition because so much money had been invested in 'The Spire', that it would look bad if it didn't win. This report in my opinion is again the Independent (hardly independent ... they are as much a political party as the tories or Labour) run council trying to brush the Warsop victory under the carpet. You can bet that if The Spire had won the mayor and the rest of the councillors would be broadcasting to the high heavens 'look what we've done, aren't we great'. Consequently as its Warsop's victory they are conveniently trying to forget it. I suppose next week we can expect a report on the fact that 9 of the options were all Mansfield ones.. hope they do because then 13,000 Warsopians can be proud that 9 out of 10 Mansfield DISTRICT attractions are less favoured than ours.

I think the press this is getting absolutely stinks! The Carrs won with 56% of the votes yet the second place runner up with only 12% gets all the publicity! When will MDC get it into their heads that Warsop is a part of the Mansfield District? When it comes to collecting our Council Tax they don't forget but when it comes to recognition, Warsop suddently pales into insignificance! The voting just shows that people in Warsop do care about their local environment and are prepared to support it! We are also voters in District elections and we will remember the attitude that has been taken on this issue! It's disgraceful!

Warsopian,

Warsop 10/12/2007 22:22:50
Mansfield Viaduct is a hit with locals??? Is it? I'm sorry, what percentage of the votes did it get? When did it suddenly deserve to be treated like the winner, because it has had more publicity than the Carrs in Warsop has! Even radio Mansfield is in on the act of "bigging up" the runner up in favour of the winner! It absolutely stinks! When is Warsop going to get the recognition and attention it deserves from MDC. After all the 'D' does stand for District, does it not... or has this been amended on the quiet. If we are not to be treated the same as Mansfield's citizens are, then the voice of Warsop will be heard come the next elections!

Warsopian the second,

WARSOP BORN N BRED N PROUD 11/12/2007 00:07:53
I think it absolutely stinks how warsop is being treated, first no recognition from MDC (Mansfield Dimwits Central) THEN radio mansfield talk about mansfield coming SECOND in a local competition THEN this. WHAT A DISGRACE. Excuse me but we are here you cant forget about us and just wait till 13'000 of us descend on the civic centre then you'll take notice. the BIGGEST mistake warsop EVER did was sign into the MDC we should have stayed our own council we'd be FAR better off.

I love the viaduct now its clean but want to thank you people for making me aware of the Carrs which I wasnt really aware of, I might just go and take a look this weekend, it is silly though to do such a big feature on the viaduct though and virtually ignore the carrs.

Jimmy Cheese-Nose,

Surely though the greatest local attraction though must be our beloved giant chrome feather........ people come from miles around just to look at it, and think to themselves........ wtf is that !!!!..

Carol Hill,

Warsop 11/12/2007 00:30:59
I agree, there's nothing wrong with the viaduct, it is a nice landmark and more deserving of votes than some of the other Mansfield entries. But it won't get my support, it doesn't need it. Not when it gets more recognistion for getting 12%, than The Carrs did for coming first with 56%! What a farce! The Carrs could do with the publicity, so that money can be raised to carry out esential maintenance that MDC won't pay for. They easily forget Warsop when it comes to funding anything. We're not asking for special treatment, just fair treatment! They seem to see this as losing and make it so obvious they are bitter about the result! Even this report doesn't mention The Carrs until the last paragraph! How utterly biased!!! Who's pulling the Chad's strings???
