VINTAGE footage of the Queen - then Princess Elizabeth - visiting Mansfield Market Place has been unveiled this week.
The footage was captured by local amateur cinematographer Ken Robey, who has given it to Mansfield District Council to use as part of its new multi-media Heritage Trail.

  • Click the green 'play' icon to watch the video, with commentary provided by Mansfield resident Sylvia Fryer.

And this is not the only historic footage provided for the occasion - as you can also see footage of legendary steam train the Flying Scotsman pulling into Mansfield Train Station, as well as the arrival of Billy Smart's Circus - complete with a herd of 12 elephants.

Heritage

The footage has been unveiled as part of the council's new Heritage Trail, which is to be unveiled at noon today in the town's market place.

The exciting £120,000 project encourages time-travelling visitors to uncover information about the town's history with an MP3 audio tour and booklet filled with local people's stories and memories of places along the route.

And anyone with a video-enabled MP3 player will also be able to watch video footage, such as this footage of the Royal visit, at key moments.

The trail explores more than 40 places of historical interest and tourism bosses are hoping it will draw in more visitors from outside the area — as well as educate locals about their own town.

Kicking off from Mansfield Museum the trail explores various buildings and monuments in four areas of Mansfield's bustling market town; Leeming Street, Market Place, Church Street and West Gate.
