BRITAIN'S last surviving Lancaster bomber took part in a flypast over the Derwent Reservoir to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the famous World War II Dambusters raids.
The spectacular display on Friday followed a memorial service with prayers and a wreath laying ceremony for the 53 men who lost their lives in the operation - which used bouncing bombs invented by Ripley-born Barnes Wallis to breach a dam.
The Lancaster made three passes over the dam and was accompanied on the third by two Tornadoes from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and then followed by a Spitfire and a Hurricane. The flypast finished with a Dakota.
Among those attending the event were Les Monroe, the last surviving pilot who had come from New Zealand, and actor Richard Todd who played Wing Commander Guy Gibson in the hit movie which highlighted the famous wartime operation.
They were joined by former local Bomber Command members Ron Brown, Andre Russell, Dennis Slack and Jeff Hildreath, together with former fighter bomber pilot Ian Linney.

Also among those at the event were members of the public who had applied for 400 tickets available by ballot.
Those unsuccessful in the ballot watched the aircraft fly over Chatsworth later in the day.
