OLLERTON folk who know their 'goosegogs' from their 'nobby greens', or their 'neshs' from their 'mardys', are being asked to help contribute towards an upcoming book of east Nottinghamshire dialect.
The book is being created by Nottinghamshire County Council as part of the National Year of Reading, and bosses hope to make a record of favourite local words and sayings for future generations to look back on.

Claire Brown, area co-ordinator for Ollerton library, said: "Many of our local words originate from the Saxon and French languages but over the centuries have become uniquely Nottinghamshire – in pronunciation and meaning.

"We are asking local people to share with the rest of the county what they know about their own dialect – we're eager to hear what people say, how they say it and what it means."

A folder of people's contributions will be on display at Ollerton, Southwell, Edwinstowe, Farnsfield and Bilsthorpe libraries until the end of the year and for more information on the National Year of Reading visit www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/yearofreading.

Agreed Squire!

But why is it just the people of Ollerton who are being asked? What about them from Rennuth or Bildduth, never mind Mansfild and Woodus

There are those of us who are native top the County who also speak in the local dialect besides those from Ollerton.

How can we take part?

Farnsfield and Southwell residents are mainly dormitory residents - well at least the latest lot who just live there and don't take part in any village activities o0r give custom to the local tradesmen.

Its a waste of time sending the display to them as they won't appreciate it - never mind understand it!

They're furriners and couldn't care less
