THE atmosphere at Nottingham's Royal Concert Hall on Wednesday evening was electric as the packed audience waited in anticipation for the world-famous Buena Vista Social Club musicians to take to the stage.
And the show, which featured members Guajiro Mirabal, Cachaito Lopez, Manuel Galban and Aguaje Ramos together in a 12-piece band direct from Havana, certainly did not disappoint.

Following on from the original 1996 Buena Vista Club recordings, the band took the enthusiastic audience on a magical trip to the Afro-Cuban dancehalls of 1940s Havana.

The musicians were all extremely talented and the performance was passionate as they moved seamlessly between gentle, meandering pieces to the pulsating, high-energy favourites.

On stage, the band seemed to be having a great time as each of them encouraged each other in their instrumental solos and this enthusiasm rubbed off on the audience, which by the end was on its feet dancing.

One of the stand-out performances came from laúd player Barbarito Torres, who tucked the instrument behind his back as he played El Cuarto de Tula, while the encore performance of the romantic Dos Gardenias left the audience awe-struck.

The band's performance in Nottingham was a flawless triumph, which it will be no doubt repeating as it continues its UK tour.
