DESPITE a much improved display and leading in the fourth minute of stoppage time, Mansfield Town were eventually knocked out of the Setanta Shield on penalties at York City on Tuesday night.
This was the sides' fourth meeting of the season already and Stags led through Emile Sinclair's 46th minute goal deep into time added on when Mark Greaves headed a last gasp equaliser.

Then after extra time failed to yield a winner, the Minstermen gained revenge for last week's FA Cup exit at Field Mill as they won the penalty shoot-out.

York started the shoot-out and Farrell fired wide, before Stallard chipped his kick against the bar as the keeper went the wrong way.

Boyes then sent Gamble the wrong way to give City the lead and Jeannin's spot kick was saved.

Sodje gave York a 2-0 lead and D'Laryea netted the Stags' first of the shoot-out to make it 2-1.

Hogg made it 3-1 to the home side before Hurren also scored for the Stags. But Rusk then netted to give York a 4-2 shoot-out win.

Chris Wood was given his first start of the season as Billy McEwan made five changes as he named a very attacking line-up.

Wood's inclusion meant a night off for Gary Silk at right back.

Others brought in were Alan O'Hare, Mark Stallard, Gavin Hurren and Emile Sinclair.

Left out were Jon D'Laryea (on the bench), Jason Lee, Matt Somner and Adie Moses (all rested).

Among the names on a very young bench was talented 16-year-old local winger Nick Langford who has just signed full forms for the Stags. Langford is also a top class cricket prospect and has played for England Under-15s.

York gave a debut to experienced striker Bruce Dyer, who had not been offered a deal at Bradford where he had been training, and summer signing Steven Hogg, injured since his arrival from Gretna.

Manager McEwan opted to watch the game from the stand alongside chairman Andy Perry and co-owner Andy Saunders.

On four minutes Wood made his first contribution with a curling cross that Stallard headed straight at Ingham and soon after he was back making a challenge on the incoming McWilliams which saw the York man's finish drop tamely into Gamble's arms.

Dyer tested Gamble with a low 20 yard effort on six minutes but the young keeper was down safely.

Ahmed won Mansfield a free kick 25 yards from goal which Jeannin curled wide.

But City won a corner on 10 minutes which McGurk flicked at goal, Stallard clearing off the line and, when Purkiss put it back into the mixer, Greaves headed over at the far post.

Sinclair's shot was well held by Ingham in the next Mansfield threat, then O'Connor had a low cross half cleared to Ahmed just inside the box and he tried to place a sidefooted finish on target but was wide.

Stags had another escape when a long ball in was turned across the face of goal by Greaves after Purkiss had seen his long cross from the right bounce through everyone to clip the far post.

On 27 minutes Hurren almost broke the deadlock but his six yard header was too high from Jeannin's excellent left wing cross after he had been set up by Stallard.

Sodje got goalside of Chanot from a long forward ball as Stags looked for an offside flag, but the Frenchman stuck to his task and got in a tackle as Sodje tried to shoot.

Ahmed and O'Connor both had shots charged down after a good burst down the middle by Arnold while Gamble was easily able to block a Russell volley from 18 yards in City's next raid.

Six minutes from the break Gamble had a harder save to make as McWilliams cued up Hogg for a vicious low curling shot from 20 yards which he did well to hold.

On 43 minutes McWilliams' cushioned volley from 25 yards from a long ball in from the right from Purkiss curled over Gamble's stretched fingertips and came back off the far angle And soon after Dyer sent a near post header wide as City ended a scoreless half on the front foot.

But Stags came back out to shock the home side with a goal inside 42 seconds. O'Connor slipped a great through ball into the path of Sinclair who skipped away and flicked it perfectly past Ingham into the empty nets with two defenders chasing the ball in vain.

Ahmed was well wide with a hopeful 30 yard effort

O'Connor should have made it 2-0 on 52 minutes as he burst into the box and, with the keeper in his sights and Sinclair an option to his left, blasted a low finish wide.

Hogg got a curling 20 yard free kick on target on 59 minutes, Gamble again watching it all the way to make a safe catch.

A minute later Dyer's low shot lacked any real venom to trouble the Forest loanee.

Rusk came as close as York had all half on 67 minutes when a left wing free kick was cleared to him outside the box and his powerful low shot was inches wide.

Sinclair was wide at the other end after Arnold's pass had carved out the chance.

But on 69 minutes in a frantic scramble Jeannin made two amazing point blank range goal line clearances to thwart , the first an overhead effort from Sodje and the follow-up from Boyes.

In an increasingly end to end game Arnold forced a flying save from Ingham to his left and Stallard headed over from the corner.

In the meantime youngster Langford came on for his debut.

Rusk was well wide at one end and then his poor control at the other allowed Arnold a low snapshot just wide.

Sinclair also forced a good save out of Ingham in a stoppage time breakaway after racing at goal from the halfway line.

But in the fourth minute of stoppage time York won a corner which Hogg sent over and Greaves buried a powerful header which took a deflection as it flew past Gamble.

Hurren forced Ingham to fingertip a dipping long range shot over his bar four minutes into the extra half hour.

Then McGhee was well wide as he sliced a shot from 20 yards as defenders retreated in front of him.

Gamble did well to punch clear as Sodje threatened to beat him to a Hogg through ball while Boyes bundled a finish just wide from 25 yards as the break approached.

York had the benefit of the doubt as Sinclair broke clear and Ingham raced from his box, appearing to use his hands to block 15 yards out of his area as the striker tried to flick the ball wide of him and nothing was given.

The second half saw fewer chances though Boyes was only fractionally wide with five minutes left and then Langford was crowded out at the far post as he rose to meet McGhee's centre as the game went to spot kicks.

it's a disgrace - watch the video and then explain why their keeper was not sent off for clear handball way out of his area and for stopping a certain goal

I agree that the goalkeeper should have had the early bath last evening. No wonder Billy is getting upset with referees decisions and if that was not a good example of bad reffing I am a Dutchman. Robbed again. Come on lads keep your chins up and concentrate on the biggy on Saturday. We have to beat "The Spireites" at all cost's. Nothing matters but to beat the old enemy on their patch come Saturday.

As well as their Keepers blatant hand ball, their goal was 100% OFF-SIDE!!!!!!They had a player, stood directly in front of Paddey, virtually on the goal line, obscuring his view of the ball. Now if that`s not being "Active", Christ knows what is!!!!!!

Sub standard Referees at this level!!!!!!!!

iv'e given bm stick for complaining about the standard of referee's in this league but will forgive him on this one, definate red card for keeper and offside in 90 + 4 when they scored where did the + 4 come from? but we were not very good at penalties, never mind it was only a mickey mouse trophy we were playing for!
