STAGS boss Billy McEwan had not even taken up his position in the dug out when his side conceded inside 11 seconds to lose 1-0 at struggling Altrincham on Tuesday tonight.
It was the first time the Stags have failed to score this season and a very disappointing result at a ground where they knew there was every chance of recording their first away win of the season.

Instead Mansfield provided the Robins with only their third win of the campaign thanks to yet another soft goal and McEwan choked: "I just can't believe what happened.

"I never even saw it because I was just coming out of the tunnel and it was in the back of the net.

"I have said before that we do gift silly goals - and there is another one. If we stop doing that then we might have a chance of winning matches. It is very disappointing.

"Their keeper has made some good saves to be fair, a couple of really good ones.

"You have to respect the opposition and if you are not right than anyone can beat anyone - I've said it before and that's proven to be right again.

"There was a lot of effort and commitment from the players but not a lot of thought.

"They gave it a real good go, but I never thought we were in any danger of conceding any other goals other than us committing hari-kari.

"A lack of penetration is a problem we have at the moment. We have know about it, but it is not for a want of trying. We caused them problems with some good build ups but we were disappointing in the final third where we had no end product.

"You can't point to anyone in the team, but there were certain thing we didn't do and they know they have to do better than that.

"Up front we were disappointing but it is pointless blaming individuals.

"I thought we had got a good opportunity of winning tonight and I said to the players before the game it was a good chance for us.

"They had not got a lot of wins under their belt and we were coming off the back of a decent draw against Cambridge.

"We were looking to carry on what was a decent second half performance against Cambridge, but it didn't happen.

"I'm disappointed for the travelling fans that we have not given them more."

He added: "In the first half we played some decent football without carving them open.

"We had one good chance where Mark Stallard headed over and the final ball in could have been a lot better.

"I don't want to give too much away ahead of Saturday, but we know what we have got to work on.

"We miss (Aaron) O'Connor and the way he can stretch teams, but we don't know if he has got a chance for Saturday.

"But we have got two strikers who are experienced and good
players and I'm sure they know they can do better, as do the rest of the team.

"Nothing dropped for us in the final third but we also had problems in the build-up, with the end product.

"Whether it was crosses or people not being aggressive enough with their runs to get in positions, there are one or two players we need more from."

Stags could be without left back Alex Jeannin at the weekend after he limped off with a thigh injury that he been having treatment on prior to the game.

Earlier in the day McEwan had taken the precaution of registering former Sheffield Wednesday youngster James Kay in case of needing another left back though left winger Michael Blackwood eventually did well there for much of the seconds half.

"I thought we lost our shape a bit when Alex when off and Michael had to change position," said McEwan.

"James is just a young boy. Alex Jeannin was not 100 per cent and thought he might be struggling.

"But then he said he would be fit. Michael Blackwood can play there and would have done had he not made it. That is one of the reasons I brought him (Blackwood) in. He can play in several positions and is very versatile,

"James has been training with us for a few weeks and we got him in as a precaution."

McEwan refused to let the press speak to any of the Stags players last night.

After the rosy start to the season Stags have now taken only one point from the last nine and have two investigations into their transfer dealings in motion which could result in points being deducted.

Well Billy, you asked us to judge things after 10 games.
It`s now 11 & our away record, so far, is pretty poor to say the least!!!
2 points from a possible 15 is hardly promotion form is it?.....And not played any of the "big" sides yet!
I must thank Argos for being very very late with a delivery yesterday.they were so late it prevented me wasting time, effort & money travelling to watch that defeat!!!!
So far, from what I`ve seen in this league,we should be up there & "walking" away with it with the players we`ve got.So where`s it going wrong?????
O`Connor`s out & we`ve no option to change things!
Time is NOW, to improve the squad, not wait until we`ve got half a dozen injuries & suspensions.
Thank god for our home form!
Come on Billy,ACT NOW,BEFORE we start slipping down the league

Dissapointed Billy, He's Bringing in the players, with the passion to play for Mansfield Town, ID SEND HALF OF THEM TO THE J O B CENTRE, Billy cant keep making up excuses, the goalkeeper is to blame one week, I feel sorry for the club, The new onwners knew what bank balance they have and what the budget is, Billy needs a few more experianced players, I was suprised to see the Club top, but i bet you all they wont finish about half way in this poor league, because they will wait too long before doing anything, I used to watch the stags in the 60's and i think my last match was when the got relegated out the old second division, I predicted they would get relegated 12 matches from the end of last season, The players were not good enough, I atched the Fa cup game against Middlesbro , and thought if they played like that they might just miss out the drop, but sadly i was wrong, This league isnt easy, You fans thought it was great being top for a week, but you havent played the crunch matches yet.
Mansfield win when you dont expect them too, they always have been the same, and teams they should hammer always ends up with an embarressing loss.
Its sad to see mansfield in the mire, but if the new owners dont act then this team is doomed, Mansfield public wont watch this football for long, its expensive to watch, your better off going to Rainworth miners welfare or Blidworth and watch the same style of soccer, and much cheaper youd even be able to buy a few pints to drown your sorrows.I'm interested how the new owners act, they all sat smilling around the table when it was announced they had bought the club, But Billy is not too blame, he needs cash to inject new blood into the club, i dont know what the cash flow situation is at field mill, but it cannot be healthy, No league cup run, might be a struggle in the fa cup, and the few away fans from the unknown clubs, id hate to be running the club, the owners are lucky mansfield public are getting behind the team, but i ca

Why was Billy still coming out of the tunnel and missing the goal, surely you need to be on the touchline from the off. If his players are late for training it's a mighty rocket from him!!!

Walked off at half-time. This was the most inept performance i have ever seen from a Mansfield side.
Short of ideas, no confidence, and all the players know they wont get dropped because there is no competition for places. Last night was abysmal.
Billy once said, people know the way I want the game played. Sounds like all the opposition does, but our team doesn't.
I am in work this morning in Stockport, and the grief I am getting is unreal.
Time for a rest from me. I will not pay good money to watch a team no better than a Sunday Morning team (No disrespect to them intended)

anyone would think we are manchester united with fans like us, moaning because we are not tearing away at the top of league. get a grip people, back in june alot of us thought we would have no club to support at all. we had no players and very little hope of a top half finish in bsp if elected to play in it at all. look we a doing a great job so far lets not forget this season is about building for future and getting sorted on and off pitch so cut a little slack. only problem i have is why new owners are so quiet on take over details. keep the faith
