The Stags had netted 35 goals in four qualifying rounds before meeting far tougher opponents in big spending Posh - watched by Barry Fry and Darren Ferguson.
The visitors quickly built up a 2-0 lead after half an hour, before Conor Higginson fired in a fine strike in the 33rd minute.
Nine minutes into the second half the young winger smashed in a tremendous solo equaliser.
Higginson, who might have won the tie himself with a hat-trick goal in normal time, then turned goal provider in the second period of extra time as Grant Ryan nodded in his cross to clinch a memorable victory.
