MANSFIELD Town's rising stars continued their remarkable FA Youth Cup journey with a stirring fightback to topple Peterbrough United on Wednesday.
The teenagers, who had scored a hatful of goals in qualifying rounds to reach the First Round, had trailed 2-0 in Wednesday night's tie at Field Mill.

But the youngsters fought back to force extra time and then snatched an unlikely winner to earn a standing ovation - and a Second Round trip to Lincoln City.

The Stags had netted 35 goals in four qualifying rounds before meeting far tougher opponents in big spending Posh - watched by Barry Fry and Darren Ferguson.

The visitors quickly built up a 2-0 lead after half an hour, before Conor Higginson fired in a fine strike in the 33rd minute.

Nine minutes into the second half the young winger smashed in a tremendous solo equaliser.

Higginson, who might have won the tie himself with a hat-trick goal in normal time, then turned goal provider in the second period of extra time as Grant Ryan nodded in his cross to clinch a memorable victory.

MANSFIELD TOWN: Herriott, Ludlum, Turner, Purcicoe, West, McCormick, Higginson, Naylor, Ryan, Logan, Atkin.

The young Stags played an incredible match tonight! Well worth the effort to come along to Field Mill and support the boys - far more entertaining than the First Team!! Conor Higginson was different class but the whole team put in a tremendous performance to come back from two down. WELL DONE BOYS!! Just hope the First Team put in as much effort this Saturday. Good Luck in the next round!

Well done to Dave Jervis and his team. Let's hope these young players can be part of a bright new era for the club.

Sadly chaps what Ihave seen of the Youth team its full of talented lads. We are now a non league team who pay non league wages and in a couple of years time both Conor and Grant will be playing LEAGUE football probably at that small club near Mansfield. They wont stop long if they progress as fast as they are now. But then again once Bill and Richo have coached them for 3 months in the 1st team they'll probably be as clueless as the rest.
