MANSFIELD Town's first venture into the Central League ended in defeat on Tuesday evening.
The Stags' reserves were beaten 3-1 at Walsall - with youngster Warren Burrell the goalscorer.

They featured a mixture of fringe first team players and youngsters, together with the experienced Jason Lee and a trialist - defender Rikki Bains.

However, Swansea keeper David Knight, who had been expected to feature for the Stags, did not play.

Lee hit the bar early on and Baines (20), a free agent who started his career at Coventry and recently played for Tamworth, headed wide from a corner.

  • Trialists lined up for reserves

Then Robinson broke clear and thought he had scored when he beat the keeper, only for the ball to be cleared off the line.

And the home side made the visitors pay when in the 17th minute Reich beat young keeper Luke Herriott with a low shot.

Four minutes later Walsall doubled their lead as Deeney found himself clear with just Herriott to beat.

Burrell gave the Stagsa lifeline at the start of the second half, but within minutes Demontagnac's deflected shot had restored the home side's two-goal lead.

Robinson, Burrell, Lee and McGhee all might have scored for the Stags in the second half.
