MANSFIELD Town could be thousands of pounds out of pocket next season if troubled sports broadcasters Setanta go to the wall.
The Irish company are currently two years into a five-year deal with the conference worth £2.5m but have run into serious financial problem, forcing them to recently default on a £3m end-of-season payment to the Scottish Premier League.

Setanta now desperately need to find backers to pay a £30m debt to the English Premier League and is reported to be losing £100m a year.

Last season Stags made £20,000 from three live appearances in front of the Setanta cameras, which included a home fixture against Oxford United.

Stags chairman Andy Perry told Chad the club were watching the situation closely.

"We are keeping an eye on the situation but it doesn't look good at the moment,"he said.

"For Mansfield Town, being on the television meant £20,000 in cash as well as valuable publicity.

"We are marketing the club and pushing it as hard as we can and being on the television helps give us a big lift.

"It is also good news for the whole town to see the club on tv. I wouldn't be suprised if Sky came in to take over the contract, but we will just have to see how the situation develops."

Setanta currently hold the television rights to major golf tournaments, the high-profile Indian Premier League cricket, rugby union competitions and have broadcast numerous England fixtures.

David and Goliath comes to mind and like in most cases Goliath wins, unfortunately Setana didn't have enough stones (money)or the sling to throw them to win to battle of the big box.

im getting a strong feeling this and being a 1000 adult sales down on season tickets is causing the owners deep concerns. i really hope we dont over spend and do what many small clubs do, i think next season is huge and could shape the next few years. if we dont go up then i can see gates of 1000 being the norm, and mid table at best. im being a realist here and hopefully we will go up. but none of us really know how good we really are or just how good the likes of oxford luton wrexham are going to be, because they all think they are going to walk this league also.

Fear not all will be well. No money for us means no money for the rest of the BSP. Sound business sense by Pezz n Co will mean they WILL have budgeted for this eventuality as it has been rumbling for some time now, and its not as if it's popped up all of a sudden. Top brass at BSP HQ has warned clubs not to budget for this cash, so Pezz n Co will have done this. Their predecessor would have used it as another excuse to keep prices up and bring in below standard staff while syphoning of yet more cash to Calver and Portugal. At least Pezz n Co are putting the money back into the club and not their back pockets. Stay positive mansfieldboy like me and Delboy.......all will be well when we do the treble!!!!!!!

I dont mean to sound flippant, but what`s £20,000?
Just 103 Adult Season ticket sales equates to £20,085.
A good cup run & a plum tie against one the "Big" boys in the 3rd round, will make £20,000 look like small change.
What about Stags Fans United(or whatever they`re now called),or The SSA chipping in to soften the blow?
Better still,if the meat pies cost, say £1,then we`ll need to sell around 12,500 at £2.60 each & then we`re ok!
Anyway,what`s all the panic?
Just imagine how much we`ll make, when we win the FA Cup............lol

its £20,000 appearance money, its £80,000 up front! and remember the season ticket plan well down. all im saying is lets hope that if we dont go up some money held back. we arnt chesterfield with there wealthy backer or notts with what seems like a dream like take over. i think we will make the play offs but then its just luck. my brother lives in the north east and cant understand anyone taking the new boy on, but like the other new boys give him a chance.
